It has been in the pipeline for some time, but now a concrete decision has been made that Budapest’s Natural History Museum will leave the capital and move out to Debrecen. The project is integral to urban development in Hungary’s second city, and should take place by 2030.

First announced In 2018, the proposal to move the Natural History Museum to Debrecen found opposition in certain quarters, asserting that the NHM was not only a museum, but also a unique collection and resource of international status, hence it should be in Budapest. Others fear that the objects might become damaged during the move – many are fragile and would not be able to withstand the long-distance relocation. Speaking on behalf of the decision, the Minister of Innovation and Technology, László Palkovics, announced that current technology should be able to avert this.

The museum will be one of the highlights of Debrecen’s increased cultural profile. It is not yet known exactly when the move will take place and where the new building will stand.
