Starting this Whitsun weekend with street music and a communal clean-up, the Pest embankment between Margaret Bridge and Közraktár utca just past Fővám tér will be closed to motorists on Saturdays and Sundays until September. Originally a successful election promise by incoming city mayor Gergely Karácsony, this popular initiative has also been integral to the Restart Budapest programme he announced in mid May.

Pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders and rollerbladers can reclaim the Pest embankment every weekend all summer long thanks to an extension of the Restart Budapest initiative announced on 15 May.

This Whitsun weekend coincides with Children’s Day on 31 May with music and family-friendly events planned by the Danube. Saturday sees the first of a series of weekly communal clean-ups, between 11am and 2pm, instigated by urban activists Valyo in the name of environmental awareness and sustainability. Car-free festivities continue into Monday, and then on consecutive weekends until September.
