The Socialist-era HÉV trains serving Budapest’s suburbs, most notably the tourist destination of Szentendre, are to be modernised. Further development will include the construction of a new bridge from south Buda to Csepel island.
HÉV trains, which serve destinations as diverse as Szentendre, Gödöllő and Ráckeve, are being overhauled. Easy-access, air-conditioned carriages, without the high steps that currently make life difficult for many passengers, will be introduced. As already reported, the HÉV will also form part of new metro line 5, with an extension of the Csepel branch to central Kálvin tér in Pest.
The development of south Pest also ties in with the building of a new sports stadium on the northern tip of Csepel island, where the 2023 World Athletics Championships will take place.
