From the holiday weekend of 13 March onwards, trains on metro lines 2 (red) and 4 (green) will run until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. The move follows successful initiatives by the Budapest Transport Authority (BKK) to serve passengers for longer hours during holidays and celebrations such as New Year’s Eve.

While Budapest has long had a comprehensive network of night buses, its four-line metro system usually closes around 11.30pm, the red and green around 12.30am at weekends. Now these later hours are being extended until 2am, allowing revellers to take advantage of the city’s many nightlife options.a

At the same time, the frequency of night buses with similar routes will drop. The number 6 tram, meanwhile, which zips along the Grand Boulevard calling at major points in Pest, should still run every 12-20 minutes seven nights a week. See timetables here.
