Intercultural community organisation MiraDoor is celebrating the Hindu festival of Diwali today, Wednesday 30 October, with lights, lectures and painting celebrations.

Diwali is a major Hindu festival in India, and is celebrated in different ways across the country. It heralds the triumph of light over darkness, of good over evil, and is also observed by Jains and Sikhs.

Diwali means ‘rows of lights’, and is celebrated by lighting diya lamps to spread light in the darkness. Pretty patterns, rangoli, are made for decoration and to spread positivity with colour. At tonight’s event, speakers Rahul Kumar of Debrecen University and Akanksha Singh of Pécs University will be giving talks on the history, myths and traditions of the festival.

MiraDoor is an intercultural community space where foreigners living in Hungary can learn about different cultures and practise new languages. It sets up intercultural events and creative workshops, the community space managed by Mira intercultural community of the Artemisszió Foundation and Open Doors Hungary.
