Frida Kahlo is one of the most iconic painters of the 20th century, her art almost as well-known as her tragic life. A major retrospective of her works attracted thousands of visitors to Budapest’s National Gallery in 2018. Now the Kunsthalle is showing another side of the Kahlo story: ‘Frida’s Country’, an exhibition of photography by her father, Guillermo.

According to family legend, 18-year-old Wilhelm Kahlo, a German emigré, arrived in the Americas at the end of the 1880s. Throughout the first decades of the century, as Guillermo he travelled through Mexico, capturing the country’s rich architectural heritage. The photos reveal a colonial past of ornate temples and monasteries, as well as Mexico City as it developed into a modern metropolis.

He had a good eye, not only for historical monuments, but also for the artistic recording of the use of modern industrial facilities and demolition techniques. His first image that captured the public imagination was of the elegant ironmongery, Casa Boker, inaugurated in 1900. His approach was ahead of its time, displaying the style of the new objectivity associated with the Bauhaus of the 1930s.

Another interesting aspect of the exhibition – apart from its familial ties – is that there are several pictures of the former National Theatre of Mexico City, whose glass curtain and ceiling were created by Hungarian artist Géza Maróti. After World War I, jewellery giants Tiffany completed the work.

The current exhibition also displays several portraits of the artist and reveals the intimate relationship between father and daughter. The secret world Guillermo’s photography workshop and dark room, and the density and abstract nature of his images, had a significant effect on Frida’s work.

The experiences of their joint trips Mexico are also shown. Frida’s Country is not only about Mexico, but also about the intertwined heritage of two extremely talented artists. Documentation is provided in English.
