In the upcoming months, Budapest should see an increasing number of locals and visitors traversing the city on electric scooters, thanks to a service newly introduced by Lime, a US-based transportation-rental company. With a top speed of 25 kilometres per hour, these two-wheeled vehicles can be picked up and dropped off anywhere in the city. During the night, the Lime team collects the scooters from the streets to take them to their docking stations for recharging.
“The benefits to cities are clear: we offer a service that doesn't cost the city a penny,” said Paloma Castro Martinez, Lime’s Director of International Communications, at the SMART Conference in Budapest. “We make moving around fun and enjoyable, we bridge the gap between existing mobility options and we therefore reduce the need for car parking,” she added.

Lime has operations in more than 100 cities around the world, its e-scooters are kitted out with GPS and an automated locking system. To use the service, customers have to download the Lime app from the App Store or Google Play. The app locates the nearest scooter and it also unlocks it for them.
After an initial test phase, when it’s fully rolled out the Lime system should become integral to Budapest’s transportation network.
