Adél and Anikó run a business focused on an undeniably niche product, aimed at a narrow section of consumers. Doboliva is a speciality shop selling oils and other olive-based products, a hidden cellar with exciting delicacies from the Mediterranean.
Transforming this cellar into a shop was quite a job, clearing away old car parts, but the low temperature and lack of sunlight is perfect for keeping olive oil. Thanks to a thorough redesign, the cellar now sports an impressive, authentic Mediterranean style with rustic brick walls and furniture, its table fashioned from an old door.
Just as for wine, you can participate in olive-oil tastings. A sampling session is structured in similar fashion, starting from the lightest product and proceeding towards more robust varieties. Aromatised oils, lemon, orange or yuzu, add playful flavours to each tasting.
There’s also a video of harvesting and oil-making processes. After travelling to many olive groves to meet producers, the girls have an in-depth knowledge of the subject should you wish to ask any questions.
Doboliva only stocks items by small-batch manufacturers as these producers are experts in their field. A careful curating process ensures that all products here are flavoursome and high-quality.
Some of the bottles themselves are works of art, resembling those for perfume or cognac, but you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The ideal choice depends on what you need the oil for. They have one that’s better for salads, another for antipasti or even baking cakes. Feel free to ask for advice.
We also tasted exciting, special oils: one had notes of freshly cut grass, but we tried nuttier, heavier ones as well, with or without bread. Don’t be intimidated by tasting the oil, you don’t have to gulp it down by the glassful.
Besides magnificent Croatian, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian varieties, they also sell vinegar, gourmet tinned fish, many kinds of olive fruit, cakes and chocolate.
Even though they only opened recently, the good news is that Doboliva has already attracted regulars and many curious customers eager to find out about oil and experiment. It’s always good to learn something new in good company – particularly in a special store with a rare, intriguing profile.
