If you don’t speak Hungarian but want to see a film in Budapest, it can be difficult to find out which ones are showing in English. Luckily, many cinemas and film clubs screen newly released features and classic flicks with English subtitles and/or with the original audio. Each month we share some movies to check out, with links to the show times too, so you’ll know exactly which cinema to head to and when. All you need do is grab some popcorn!

BANFF Mountain Film Festival

Massive rock formations, fast-flowing waters and snow-capped mountains… Embark on an adrenaline-filled escapade to exotic places and explore the wonders of the world through dramatic action brought to Budapest by the BANFF Mountain Film Festival. Taking place between 10-12 April, it presents a selection of adventure documentaries at the Corvin Cinema. The films touch on a wide range of topics, but they all have something in common: a love of outdoor sport and a reverence for nature and human achievement, all from a uniquely artistic point of view. More details


Ben is Back

Nineteen-year-old Ben Burns unexpectedly returns to his family's suburban home on Christmas Eve. Ben's mom, Holly, is relieved and welcoming but wary of her son's drug addiction. Over a turbulent 24 hours, new truths are revealed, and a mother's undying love gets put to the test as Holly does everything in her power to keep Ben clean.

Colette

After moving to Paris, author Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette agrees to ghostwrite a semi-autobiographical novel for her husband. Its success soon inspires her to fight for creative ownership and overcome the societal constraints of the early 20th century.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

In the 1930s, the Grand Budapest Hotel is a popular European ski resort, presided over by concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes). Zero, a junior lobby boy, becomes Gustave's friend and his protégé. Gustave prides himself on providing a first-class service to the hotel's guests, including satisfying the sexual needs of the many elderly women who stay there. When one of Gustave's lovers dies mysteriously, Gustave finds himself the recipient of a priceless painting and the chief suspect in her murder.

The film screens with original audio and Hungarian subtitles on 12 April at the Bem Cinema. More details

Billy Batson is a streetwise 14-year-old who can magically transform into the adult superhero Shazam simply by shouting out one word. His new-found powers soon get put to the test when he squares off against the evil Dr Thaddeus Sivana.

Us

The director of Get Out, Jordan Peele, is now back with an equally disturbing concept in his new film, Us. Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, the family is horrified to learn that each attacker has adopted the appearance of one of them.
