This weekend, 23-24 February, passengers under 18 can ride the Children’s Railway for free if they present any soft toy, old or new, at the ticket counter. Trains depart every hour between 9:10am and 4:10pm from Hűvösvölgy and reach the terminus atop Széchenyi Hill in 40 minutes.

Whether it’s a teddy, a furry snake or even an IKEA toy broccoli, showing up with a cuddly plaything grants a free ride this weekend to passengers on the Children’s Railway, the world’s longest narrow-gauge line operated by kids.

Equipped with Communist-era carriages, the Children’s Railway chugs along the ridge of the Buda hills all year long, covering a scenic path along nine stops, including popular excursion spot Normafa and János Hill, the highest point in Budapest. During winter, zipping along this route is particularly panoramic, as there are no leaves on the trees to block the views over the city.

With an upper age limit of 18, this free weekend promotion should prove popular. Make sure to be at the station in time to receive your complimentary ticket.
