One of the world’s best cities to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Budapest is always packed with partygoers on 31 December. But going across town from one place to the other has always meant a tricky taxi journey or a long walk. Now city transport company BKK have just announced that the red, blue and green metro lines will run all night on the last day of the year.

In addition to non-stop tram line 4, HÉV trains to Szentendre and Csepel, and the regular night-bus services that run year-round, metro lines 2, 3 and 4 will also be in operation round-the-clock for New Year’s Eve. This stretching of the subway service has just been announced by BKK to make scooting around the city easier on this busiest night of the year.

This new temporary schedule affects the entire length of the red M2 and green M4 lines, and due to the ongoing renovation, a section between the Kőbánya-Kispest and Lehel tér stations of the blue M3.

Every year on 31 December, Budapest sees an abundance of partygoers zipping around the city. The streets come alive with fireworks, honking horns and cheers long before the countdown to midnight.
