Turning 100 this year, the Art Nouveau Gellért Baths are where soakers should congregate on September 8-9th. To observe a century-old history, the turquoise spa is welcoming the public with a thematic escape-room game, a peculiar photo exhibition and a DJ spinning lounge sounds all day. Weather permitting on Saturday, the Gellért 100 Festival transforms the outdoor wave pool into a chilled cinema auditorium for the English-language screening of “I Spy”, the 2002 movie whose scenes were shot at this iconic Budapest landmark. Over the weekend, ordinary admission grants access to the baths.

This weekend, the Gellért should attract even more bathers as two days of merriment make a splash amid the spa’s stately surroundings. Both on Saturday and Sunday, events start early morning and include themed escape-room games to reveal secrets of Gellért history. Registration is available on the spot on a first come first served basis.

Meanwhile, a display of obscure photos by former Gellért lifeguard Sándor Pusztai shows renowned poets, politicians, actors and singers of various eras enjoying the healing waters of the baths. The exhibition is open over the weekend.

On Saturday from 6pm, an outdoor movie screening features I Spy starring Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson. In the film, the duo is captured in action around the baths, certain scenes having been shot right here. Guests can even watch the film by lounging in the large alfresco wave pool, built 90 years ago as the first of its kind in the world.

Both days between 10am and 6pm, a DJ plays ambient lounge tunes. When the electronica extravaganza stops on Sunday, the Budapest Bár takes over with Gypsy virtuosity and a bit of rock ‘n’ roll. The festival concludes as guests launch balloons into the sky, each containing a small note that conveys an individual wish.

While today they operate separately, the Gellért Hotel and baths opened in 1918 as one establishment. Considered an important monument in the heritage of Hungarian and international Art Nouveau, the building features rich details of the architectural trend that still defines the baths. Within, graceful fountains, stained-glass windows and turquoise Zsolnay tiles evoke a fairy-tale atmosphere.

Recently, the Gellért served as a venue for a global filming project by Gucci and a photo shoot for GQ Magazine starring Ryan Gosling dressed in a Ralph Lauren suit.

Visit the Gellért Baths website for more information about the festival (in Hungarian only).
