Easy to reach over the zebra crossing from Batthyány tér, the ship is large, more graceful than robust, even with the huge deck crane high above. The boat can accommodate about 400 people, and although it looks for all the world as if someone’s having their own private party here, invariably you won’t find yourself in the middle of a posh wine tasting. Rather, you’re in for a night at an industrial-style pub in a rather unusual setting.

On any given evening, you can see the lights on the Chain Bridge being lit and birds circling around the dome of the illuminated Parliament building.

Many of TRIP’s regulars and staff share an affinity and links with the Átrium theatre and alternative arts hub, the Jurányi Ház, so many cultural undercurrents are tied in here. In the belly of the ship, you find a huge theatre hall that can be transformed into two smaller party spaces with parquet floors. Swing dancing and salsa evenings are held here.

The season starts at the theatre hall starts in early September, with Hungarian-language performances of The Beggar’s Opera. With Budapest’s contemporary acting fraternity so keen to play in these atmospheric surroundings, there is talk of a new company being set up. Children’s matinees can also be enjoyed – again, Hungarian-language only.

In addition to cultural events, TRIP also goes big on music, with a complete diversity of styles. Goa parties and synth-wave nights are regular features, along with acoustic sets. Around this time of year, as the sun sinks, there are live sounds or a DJ of some sort. Music outdoors has a 10pm cut-off point. Mention should be also made of the upstairs terrace, a favourite place for birthdays.
