Given the integration of Budapest’s historic Amusement Park within this recently opened attraction, it’s no surprise that there’s a element of retro fairground here. Károly Pölti’s moving figures in a target game date back a hundred years. Uncovered by zoo staff in a warehouse, they have been refurbished and are ready for use. Bygone days are also recalled by a little train, out of use until the 1970s, that chugs around the park.

In addition, Károly Schäftner’s old carousel, of 1908 heritage, has been restored inside and out, its mechanical system upgraded.
In the middle of Holnemvolt Castle, Hetedhét Palace is a four-storey, 2,700 square-metre educational playhouse whose games are animal tales familiar to generations of Hungarians (Vuk, Süsü, Doctor Bubó). Some may require a certain knowledge of the local language to work out. Others, such as running faster than Vuk the cunning fox, may not.

There are also live animals in the Holnemvolt Castle area, as well as handicraft workshops in the cobbled courtyard, and the Szép Miklós playground. In a few months’ time, there will be the Hedgehog Hospital, the zoo’s emergency veterinary centre, which visitors will be able to observe, as well as Shark School, the first feature of the Pannon Park development, a major aquarium.

Tickets for the zoo are valid for Holnemvolt Castle but you can buy separate admission for 1,000 forints per child or adult. Different attractions require their own currency, such as SÜN chips at 200 forints per coin.
Holnemvolt Castle District XIV, Állatkert körút 14
Open: Mon-Fri 9.30am-6pm, Sat-Sun 9.30am-7pm
