Offering a series of amazing events for its summer season, Budapest Park officially opened its gates with a Margaret Island concert this week. But it’s not only the live music that’s worth checking out. Like last year, Nagyszünet, the courtyard hangout near Soroksári út, will function as a secluded outdoor space all week long (from 4pm weekdays, 11am-11pm at weekends) and will welcome everyone for a summer chill with spritzers, beer, concerts, movies and great parties.

The quirky wolf-head installation inherited from the Sziget Festival, the hangout area and the colourful wooden design elements are still regular fixtures, but the rest of the space can be reorganised – it can hold up to 300 chairs for an acoustic concert, 500 for an outdoor screening, or the whole area can be cleared for a crazy party. Long wooden benches and hammocks complement the table-football table, the little pool, and the bar. You can pop in to the nearby KFC, too, which will be open during this time.

This week, alt-rock hero András Lovasi and the Véletlen Trió band opened the season with a laid-back acoustic concert. The next day, Nagyszünet welcomed cyclists with healthy snacks, and movie fans could stay for an evening screening of Snatch.

You can expect a busy summer, with events organised from Monday to Wednesday, but you can hang out anytime on the green, enjoying drinks with friends before concerts. Some events will have an entry fee and without a ticket you can only stay until they’re due to start, but you can return to Nagyszünet after the Budapest Park concerts for a great party on the dance floor.

Detailed event info for May is available here. Throughout the summer, you can enjoy popular Hungarian performers, such as SzilárdBalanyi, thekeyboard player with Quimby, performing with singers Barbara Schoblocher and Flóra Kiss, as well asalt rockers 30Y, and their singer-guitarist Zoli Beck.
Recent events have included attractions such as Freak Fusion Cabaret, evoking the mysterious world of 20th-century travelling circuses. Ledpuppets will imitate an underwater world on May 16th, blending a puppet show, a live music performance and visual theatre. On May 13th, Gardrób second hand marketplace will provide a great opportunity for everyone to sell and buy unworn or used clothes and accessories.

The outdoor cinema, together with Sony Movie Channel, will bring you classics and new releases alike: in May you can watch Jumanji with Robin Williams, Schwarzenegger’s Last Action Hero or Terminator Salvation with Christian Bale.

On May 26th you can enjoy Liverpool take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final, screened in the whole Budapest Park area, and from mid-June onwards you can cheer for your faves during the World Cup. The regular events will slightly change during these times.
