The Central Bank of Hungary is continuing to redesign its currency. As part of an ongoing program under way since 2014 to replace old Hungarian banknotes with new paper money, a revamped 1,000-forint note will appear in the country’s cash flow from March 1st. The present series of blue bills will remain in circulation until October 31st. After this date, only the redesigned banknotes will be accepted for payment. Old notes in 1,000-forint denominations can be exchanged with the new bills of the same value at Hungary’s commercial banks, post offices and the Central Bank of Hungary, within specific timeframes.

Revamped design and updated security components. These are the main elements of the new Hungarian forint bills gradually being introduced into the country’s monetary circulation since 2014. The new 1,000-forint banknotes will also incorporate these upgrades that replace the current bill of the same denomination. The present 1,000-forint notes that were issued before 2017 will be accepted for payment until October 31st. After this date, the outdated series of 1,000-forint banknotes can be exchanged free of charge at any of Hungary’s commercial banks and post offices for three more years and at the Central Bank of Hungary for 20 years.

As part of this phasing out of old paper money, modernized notes were introduced in denominations of 2,000, 5,000 and 20,000 forints. These changes do not affect the current series of 500-forint banknotes, and the recently renewed 10,000-forint bills that will remain in circulation until further notice.
