Barber Shop Budapest has several man caves around town, where gentlemen can get groomed without the presence of ladies, such as on Dob Street, Király Street, Astoria, Holló Street, Erzsébet Boulevard, and in shopping centers, with one of them even found outside of Budapest. Now, as a truly unique concept in Hungary, they launched their biggest location yet on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Avenue, which also houses a museum of haircutting history, with free entry for men and ladies alike.
The newest downtown branch of Barber Shop Budapest opened in early September in a 100-square-meter location at the bustling intersection of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Avenue and Kálmán Imre Street. As part of the chain founded by a well-known Hungarian haircutting dynasty, the Gellei family, this new shop features multiple barber chairs for customized men’s-only styling and hot-towel shaves, but it also features a free museum of treasures and relics of their beloved profession for everyone to admire – ladies included.
The spacious one-room museum holds multiple display cases full of barber-shop artifacts like straightedge razors with ornate ivory handles, varied safety razors dating back to the early 20th century, metal hair dryers with chunky electrical cables, porcelain bowls and brushes specially designed for lathering shaving cream, delicately engraved pairs of silver scissors, and an original Koken barber chair from 1902 – one of only 10 such chairs in the whole world.
The establishment of a Barber Museum here not only presents an interesting free attraction for grooming enthusiasts, but also provides a nice way to kill time for customers who are waiting for a haircut on busy days.
