On café-lined Pozsonyi Road, Édesmindegy is dessert heaven. Cakes, pies, sponges and tarts, you’ll find them all here. But with winter turning ever colder, it serves one speciality that warms the heart of every Magyar: gőzgombóc. Found and revered across southern Germany and the chalets of Austrian ski resorts, gőzgombóc is also served as a main dish, as well. This sweet steamed bun is rather difficult to find around Budapest, but here is a place where, after ten minutes of anticipation, you can get your hands on this poppy seed-covered calorie bomb.

To the unititiated, the hallowed pudding known as gőzgombóc appears similar to Chinese bao buns or the salty dumplings you’ll find across southern swathes of the German-speaking world. In Austria, this massive sphere filled with plum jam is usually served with butter and powdered sugar with poppy seed. Here at Édesmindegy, it bathes in vanilla custard, too. The sweet powdered sugar and the sour plum jam create a delicious balance on the plate.

This is very much a winter delight. While enjoying the pleasantly sweet gőzgombóc in Újlipótváros, you might like to imagine that you’re actually on a skiing trip in the Alps. A freshly prepared sweet steamed bun costs 1350 forints and in quality, it at least matches the original served in Austrian mountain huts. You can find gőzgombóc on the menu at Édesmindegy until March 2018.
