Sonny and his Wild Cows at Kakas Kunszt – December 16th, 8pm
THE BAND: With a retro look and sound uncannily similar to the earliest greats of rock ’n’ roll, Sonny and his Wild Cows appear onstage like a time-traveling band touring random roadhouses across America’s dusty plains in the late 1940s and early ’50s – but the group’s timelessly lively tunes definitely get modern audiences swinging. Led by Long Tall Sonny (who probably should’ve been born in Kansas in 1933 instead of Hungary’s city of Sopron in 1983), this jacket-and-tie-wearing gang rocks pompadour hairdos and dancing fans with high-energy sets of rhythm and blues played with speedy skill; Sonny tirelessly wails English-language lyrics while passionately plucking his guitar, flinging himself onto the floorboards when the rockabilly spirit truly moves him.
THE VENUE: In late November, a new live-music club opened in the basement of a beloved Budapest dive bar near Blaha Square, and while this probably won’t become the city’s coolest hangout, it’s already presenting a promising lineup of delightfully diverse shows. Kakas Kunszt is the latest addition to Budapest’s wallet-friendly chain of Kakas pubs, and the first with a focus on hosting concerts; whoever is organizing the gigs has eclectic taste, considering that upcoming acts include an electro-pop violinist, a freestyle rap battle, a Gypsy-swing band, and several other performers of unpredictable genres.
Location: Budapest 1072, Dohány utca 56 (at corner with Akacfa) Facebook page
THE SHOW: Full disclosure – We Love Budapest hasn’t yet had the opportunity to visit Kakas Kunszt, but this intrepid reporter has seen Sonny and his Wild Cows play live before, and can confirm that this band puts on one helluva show no matter where they go, so this concert will be well worth taking a chance on a new nightspot… especially since entry is only 1,000 forints, and drinks are sure to be cheap, too. Check out the concert Facebook event for more details.
