Alvin és a Mókusok at Barba Negra – December 9th, 8pm
THE BAND: “Alvin és a Mókusok” is Hungarian for “Alvin and the Chipmunks” – but this group is definitely not comprised of squeaky-voiced rodents, and they sure as hell don’t answer to some guy named Dave, or anyone else, for that matter. Since forming in 1993 as a garage band from Hungary’s northeastern city of Nyíregyháza, this tight-knit gang of high-energy punk rockers continually draws huge crowds at concerts and festivals across the country, while releasing politically provocative albums through their independent Alvin Records label. Front man István Pásztor joins bassist Viki Csoma, guitarist Sándor Dul, and drummer Gergő Figula (who joined the band at the ripe old age of 12) to blast fast-paced tunes with jagged edge.
THE CLUB: Appropriately tucked within an industrial zone of South Buda, Barba Negra Music Club is one of the city’s biggest nightlife venues for concerts, usually of the hard-rocking variety. Here many living-legend Hungarian bands perform to prove that rock ’n’ roll will never die, although this is also a nightspot where almost-famous groups can have breakthrough shows. Barba Negra Music Club closes temporarily during warmer months, when the venue’s sister club Barba Negra Track is a popular open-air mini-festival spanning late spring through early fall.
THE SHOW: Fans will be treated to a bunch of new songs from a freshly released Alvin és a Mókusok album at this concert where crowd-surfing is almost a certainty; before the headline act, Budapest’s own Harrisons ensemble gets the place rocking with modern metal featuring loudly growled English-language lyrics.
