Sena Band at Fonó – December 2nd, 8pm
THE BAND: With an incredible ability to smoothly wrap her vocal cords around melodies of numerous genres, Ghanaian-Hungarian songstress Sena Dagadu is a powerhouse performer on Budapest’s music scene – she’s the leader of her namesake Sena Band, a founding member of W.H. (a musical ensemble performing modern versions of Shakespeare’s sonnets), and the matriarch of Hungary’s Irie Maffia family of diverse hip-hop artistes, which is a longtime festival favorite nationwide. With her soulfully mighty vocals and playful stage presence equally influenced by her intermingled African and European roots, Sena spreads messages of love, peace, and joy in every performance with her band, featuring a talented collection of Magyar musicians blasting original songs tinted with R&B, rap, reggae, jazz, and rock styles that blend beautifully to get feet moving.
THE VENUE: Part concert hall, part dance house, part cultural center, and all fun, Fonó Music Hall is a welcoming site for musicians of varied backgrounds – this is Buda’s premier venue for live performances by contemporary Hungarian folk-music bands and Gypsy-music groups, where the audience is always encouraged to dance along to the lively tunes. This is far from the most central club of Budapest (get there by taking tram 47 from Deák Square all the way to the “Kalotaszeg utca” stop, then walk back alongside the tram tracks one block and head right on Sztregova Street), but it’s worth the trip.
THE SHOW: In addition to enjoying spirited sounds of the Sena Band, concertgoers will be treated to the storytelling songs of Terra Profonda, a Magyar trio melding American blues, folk music, and jazz since 2012 to present tales of wretched wanderers, lovesick sailors, frightened horses, and other colorful characters. For more information, check out the Fonó Facebook page or website (mostly in Hungarian).
