Among Budapest’s many Christmastime marketplaces, the charming Advent Feast at St. Stephen’s Basilica is especially popular for its frequent after-sunset screenings of colorful animations projected onto the multistoried façade of the city’s grandest cathedral. This year, the merry marketplace takes these cool cartoons into the 21st century by presenting 3D animation that seems to leap right out at viewers who wear special glasses, while still providing classic Christmas attractions like hand-crafted gifts, delicious regional cuisine, and free ice-skating for kids.

Happening in downtown Pest’s Szent István Square for the seventh time this year between November 24th and January 1st, the Advent Feast at St. Stephen’s Basilica will surely draw high-spirited shoppers of all ages to peruse the market’s assortment of high-quality gift items and savory Hungarian treats – and the evening light shows projected onto the huge cathedral façade are always a big attraction, too. This year, using technology never before seen in this country, these light shows will include animation that appears to fly out from the Basilica’s frontage for anyone wearing blue-and-red 3D glasses.

The 3D glasses will be available at the marketplace, or anyone who has their own pair of these special spectacles can bring them to delight in the high-tech show’s visual effects, but the 3D animation will also be enjoyable for anyone watching with the naked eye. Along with the light shows screened every half hour after dark, the Advent Feast at St. Stephen’s Basilica will feature many other free attractions, including the central ice-skating rink surrounding a towering Christmas tree where kids under 14 skate for no charge – check out the event website for more details.
