The wine region of Tokaj and Zemplén comes into their own in the autumn. With nature providing a glorious thousand-color backdrop, winery tours, tastings and many other events take place across this north-eastern part of Hungary. It’s a gastronomic destination too, where the curious visitor can find hand-crafted cheeses, warming bowls of traditional Hungarian favorites and, these days, nouvelle cuisine. There’s also plenty of outdoor adventure to be had, with hiking trails, an amusement park and a bobsleigh course.

In the English-subtitled video below, provided to We Love Budapest by the Hungarian Tourism Agency, a new promotion highlights the Tokaj and Zemplén region during the beautiful season of autumn. The film takes you gliding over the sweeping vineyards of Tokaj and undulating hills of Zemplén before arriving at its wine cellars, cheese workshops of Mád, and restaurants both traditional and contemporary.

Sightseeing can take in the historic castle at Sárospatak, the Hollóház Porcelain Museum and the unspoiled dramatic beauty of Megyer-hegyi Tengerszem, a treat for hikers and geologists.

How to get there from Budapest:Trains for Tokaj leave every two hours from Keleti Station, journey time 2.5 hours. For Mád, change at nearby Szerencs. Also change at Szerencs for Sárospatak 45 minutes away, overall journey time from Budapest 3hr 40min.
