Hidden atop volcanic Megyer Hill in northeastern Hungary amid the world-famous Tokaj wine region, a beautiful parkland is centered by a remarkable lake at the bottom of a former millstone quarry, with its deep waters surrounded by sheer cliffs stretching 70 meters tall. This is the Sea Eye, where nature and history intermingle at an erstwhile work site that is now overgrown with lush forest life to welcome active visitors of all ages – and in the next episode of our video series showcasing diverse destinations to discover across Hungary, we can admire this sylvan site from the sky.

In the English-subtitled video below, provided to We Love Budapest by the Hungarian Tourism Agency as part of their “Hungary Awaits You” campaign to showcase the wide assortment of attractions to discover across the country, we can view sweeping drone footage of the Sea Eye and its surrounding countryside – where Hungary’s distinctive Tokaji wines are produced – while learning why this semi-natural site is a beloved attraction for all ages:

How to get there from Budapest: by car, take motorway M3 east from Budapest (make sure to buy a motorway pass), and continue east until reaching exit 151, which takes you toward Miskolc on motorway M30. Continue following motorway M30 northbound until reaching the juncture with main road 37, and follow main road 37 toward Sátoraljaújhely. Soon after passing Sárospatak, take the first left onto the gravel road (which is unfortunately unmarked), and then take the first right onto the dirt road that zigzags up Megyer Hill, leading directly to the Sea Eye – this road is not passable for all vehicles, so please consider parking toward the bottom of the dirt road and hiking up to the lake.
