Settled over a millennium ago atop a cluster of seven hills amid the undulating terrain just north of Lake Balaton, the historic city of Veszprém is a charming place to explore during a long day trip or a multi-day stay, featuring one of Hungary’s oldest castles and many other monumental attractions. How to get there from Budapest: by rail, direct trains take passengers from Budapest’s Déli Station to Veszprém multiple times daily; see the official Hungarian railway website for timetables and ticket info. By car, take motorway M7 west of Budapest (make sure to buy a motorway pass) until reaching exit 57, which is the turnoff to main road 7, and at the end of the off-ramp, turn right onto main road 7 towards “Székesfehérvár kelet”. Follow main road 7 around central Székesfehérvár until reaching the juncture with main road 8 towards Veszprém, and turn right onto main road 8, which leads directly into central Veszprém.
