When Budapest’s Liberty Bridge was closed to car traffic last weekend, jolly crowds occupied the green-hued crossing to enjoy summer’s most anticipated picnic program. Similarly to last year’s community gatherings on the statuesque span, the stunning landmark once again turned into an urban playground with people lounging in hammocks, acrobats performing soaring stunts, children frolicking, musicians playing merry tunes, and group of friends imbibing intoxicating drinks. As we reported earlier this month on We Love Budapest, on four weekends during this summer, the city’s Liberty Bridge is once again closed to motorized vehicles to instead become a hot hangout for anyone who would like to join a one-of-a-kind community gathering in Hungary’s capital. The events series – organized by the Valyo City and River Association– kicked off this past weekend, and during the two-day extravaganza, Budapest's monumental landmark was filled with people from all walks of life.
While the first day of the event was almost ruined by the wind due to stormy weather conditions, on Sunday the bridge turned into a moving festival scene with urban dwellers lounging amid sun-splashed scenes. Anyone who missed this inaugurating program can still make it to the upcoming picnics happening next weekend on June 24-25, and later this summer during August 5-6 and 12-13.
