A highlight of summer nights in Budapest is when movies are screened at open-air venues across the city, and Budapest Rooftop Cinema is the most popular summertime series of films shown on a big screen under starry skies. The new season of this series begins tonight on the sprawling rooftop of Corvin Club with a presentation of “Donnie Darko”, and we can look forward to many other alfresco screenings here all summer long, as Budapest Rooftop Cinema plans to host many events showcasing both classic and newly premiering flicks amid panoramic views of the city skyline.

The Budapest Rooftop Cinema series celebrates its 5th birthday this year, and soon opens its third summer season on the rooftop of Budapest’s Corvin Club, where they screen films beginning at sunset, just as the surrounding cityscape is bathed in beautiful twilight. The opening event of this season on June 12th is extraordinary, as from now on, they will not only screen the classic creations of the film industry, but also brand-new premieres.

Here is this summer’s weekly program: on Mondays, cult classics take the limelight (Donnie Darko will be screened at tonight’s opening event), and on Tuesdays Magyar-made movies entertain crowds, presenting a total of 14 contemporary and older films, such as Coyote, Kincsem, Strangled, and Szaffi. Before the films, 30-minute talks will be held to present inside information about the movies, often with special guests like directors, actors, and filmmakers.

On Wednesdays and Fridays premiere films screen, while from June 29th classic French films entertain movie buffs on Thursdays within the framework of the French Rooftop Cinema, organized by the French Institute. The films (Hungarian films as well) will be screened with original audio and English subtitles. Another novelty this season is that tickets can be pre-purchased online for 900 forints, promising quicker entry to the film screenings.
