Budapest’s postcard-superstar Chain Bridge – the first permanent span ever built to cross the Danube – will leave the limelight for awhile beginning this summer. According to plans, renovation works will start on the bridge on June 1st, and this major landmark will only be ready to shine once again at the end of 2019. Additionally, the Buda Castle Tunnel and Clark Ádám Square will also be renewed during the upcoming months in order to further improve the city's landmarks and infrastructure.

As its carrying capacity is not safe anymore, Budapest’s iconic Chain Bridge – originally completed in 1849 – will soon undergo a thorough renovation. During the restoration works, the bridge’s road, sidewalk, and railings will be renewed, while the stone surfaces will be repared and cleaned. The bridge is expected to be enhanced with modern street lamps and floodlights, and the underpasses of the abutments and the stairways will also be restored. Although the schedule for the work has not been finalized and is still subject to change, all of these improvements are currently slated to be completed in late 2019.

Since the Chain Bridge is undergoing such comprehensive development, renovations will also be carried out on the Buda Castle Tunnel to install new insulation and cladding. The renewal of the tunnel will result in some changes in traffic that aim to better satisfy the needs of drivers, bikers, and pedestrians alike. The streetlights will be modernized, and floodlights will be installed. Additionally, Clark Ádám Square – located between the bridge and the tunnel – will also be reconstructed; car traffic will be reduced, and pedestrian areas will be extended and enhanced with new cladding. On the Pest side, a new underpass system will be created. Keep reading We Love Budapest for more detailed updates as soon as more Chain Bridge news is available.
