There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals, performances, and more – but here is our pick of the bunch for the imminent 72 hours or so:

Friday

6pm - 10pm: Capa Pop-Up at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center
The Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center opens its gates to multi-art activities in the New Year: free pop-up events of literature, music, and film await art-lovers in January, February, and March. On January 27th, the Capa Center invites everyone to the 6pm screening of It’s Not the Time of My Life, a Hungarian film by Szabolcs Hajdu that screens with original Hungarian audio and English subtitles, before a concert by Magyar jazz trumpeter Lőrinc Barabás.
More details 8:30pm - 11:30pm: Szimpla Open Stage at Szimpla Kert
At this weekly event, all music aficionados can take the stage of the world’s most famous ruin pub to perform live. The equipment, such as two speakers, a pair of microphones with stands, and three line inputs are provided, so all you have to do is bring your band or come alone and jam with other up-and-coming musicians.
9pm - 3am:

Impostor x Rayan pres. Magari Tattoo Exhibition Fashion Show at
ImpostorOn Friday, Budapest’s downtown Impostor club fills with a lustful atmosphere fueled by alcohol, glitter, and decaying morals. Amazing tattoo works will be shown off in the framework of a fabulous fashion show, and Magyar tattooist Kristóf Magari will create terrific tattoo art on the spot.
10:30pm - 1:30am:
NEXT/ DART feat Infinit: Dopamine at TrafóDopamine
is a hybrid of genres, an experiment intermingling music and dance. While the performers on the stage establish a party-like atmosphere, crazy dancers keep popping up above, underneath, and in the middle of the crowd, which acts as a participant and a spectator of the events at the same time. The performance is English-friendly.

11pm - 6am:
Budapest in the dark pres. Ivika & Vladimir Erdber + JST MNML at Művelődési Szint
Budapest in the dark invites everyone to their next event, where techno and minimal melodies fill the air. Their mission is to feature the outstanding representatives of underground music in Europe, and this time, guest performers from Serbia play in two halls at Müszi.
Saturday

2pm - 2am: Winter Calling at Esetleg BistroBeginning at 2pm on Saturday, DJs like Indigo Theory and Rizkid spin deep house discs at Budapest’s hip panoramic hangout, Esetleg Bistro, where succulent snacks and warming libations like mulled wine and hot tea help visitors chase winter away. Chill out in the afternoon while admiring the wonderful view to the Danube and Gellért Hill, sipping on delicious drinks, and dancing into the night.

3pm - 5pm:
Recirquel Contemporary Circus Company: Night Circus at the
Palace of ArtsSet among the ten-meter-high, slowly crumbling firewalls of Budapest, the artists embark on a shared journey around the hidden depths of their own personalities, seeking to fulfil their unattainable desire to fly.

Accompanied by live piano music, this Recirquel performance has already enchanted various audiences all around the world, and toured in France two times, attracting outstanding critical reviews.
6:30pm - :
Tangerine Dream (DE) – The Quantum Years at
A38January 28-29 is an immensely important occasion for electronica enthusiasts, as one of the most significant bands of the genre, Tangerine Dream, performs live at A38. The next day, outstanding Hungarian representatives of electronic music mount the stage, and Ulrich Schnauss from Tangerine Dream steps on the stage solo.
10pm - 4am: Balkan Party at Mika Tivadar MulatóIf you like Boban Marković, Shantel, or Goran Bregović, this party is tailored to your liking; catchy brass-dominated Balkan tunes by Lapidem and Lay DNA entice everyone to the dance floor, creating a high-energy atmosphere at Mika Tivadar Mulató.
11pm - 6pm:
Garçons – Party Monsters at
KasinoWhen darkness descends upon Budapest on Saturday evening, a pleasure-seeking parade lures glam-addicts to the glittering underground party of Garçons at Kasino, where Nieder and Hotraw fuel the night with electronic beats.

Dress code: chic as hell.

Sunday

10pm - 8pm:
“Susan Swartz: Personal Path” exhibit at the Ludwig Museum
The main motif of the meditative works by American artist Susan Swartz is an investigation into the spirituality of nature and painting. Sunday, January 29th is the last day to view her intriguing exhibit at the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Arts in Budapest. 12pm - 6pm:
Chinese New Year’s Eve Market at
BAOTIFUL Chinese New Year in 2017 initiates the Year of the Rooster, which provides a perfect occasion to head to a great Chinese gastro market and indulge in excellent Asian eats and drinks on January 28th at BAOTIFUL. Plenty of exciting programs and mouthwatering Oriental meals await everyone at this special event.
5pm - 7pm: Moulin Rouge at Bem CinemaIn Moulin Rouge, aspiring writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) moves to the bohemian underworld of the Montmartre, where he falls for a captivatingly beautiful courtesan, Satine (Nicole Kidman), who is coveted by a jealous duke. On Sunday, the film screens with original English audio and Hungarian subtitles at Bem Cinema.

Liszt Ferenc Academy of MusicThe United States’s leading classical music a cappella formation, Chanticleer, is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its 12 male voices ranging from countertenor to bass, and for its original interpretations of vocal literature, from renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. This time, the Grammy-winning ensemble brings an astonishingly rich repertoire of works by nearly 20 composers to Budapest.
