As this week’s extraordinarily cold weather in Hungary caused the Danube River to freeze over for the first time in years, countless Budapest residents bundled up to admire the chilly spectacle of ice sheets flowing through the middle of the city – but locals are not the only ones who are fascinated by this phenomenon. Over the past few days, several major global-news outlets have shared eye-catching videos of the icy Danube, including the BBC, Sky News, and ABC News.

Made with a drone-mounted camera, the FlyingEyes Media video posted by the BBC provides especially breathtaking perspectives of the crystallized Danube, including artistic reflections of Budapest’s Parliament building and bird’s-eye views over huge ice floes; click here to watch the video.

Meanwhile, both ABC News and Sky News shared an impressive time-lapse video credited to “Instagram/Damirio_Kabario” that shows ice sheets flowing beneath the Liberty Bridge, as seen from Gellért Hill; click here to watch the Sky News video, and click here to watch it on ABC News.

And while we appreciate all of the attention that the Danube is getting in world news lately, below we present a few of our photos of the river that were shot when the weather was warmer, just to prove to the planet that it’s not that cold here in Budapest all the time!
