A new passenger building, a cargo center, high-tech body scanners, and a direct metro connection to downtown are all among the BUD2020 development project plans for Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, to be carried out over the next few years. The largest of Hungary’s four commercial airports experienced an increased passenger capacity over the past few years, inspiring airport management to outline long-awaited development projects. By 2020 the airport will be larger, more comfortable, and easy to reach from central Budapest.

According to an article by Turizmus Online, Budapest Airport is planning to implement a 50-billion-forint development project named BUD2020 over the next five years. The operator of Liszt Ferenc International Airport prepared the BUD2020 renovation program because passenger traffic has grown significantly at the airport over the past few years, urging anticipated renovation works. One of the priority project plans is to construct the so-called Pier B, a new building for passengers. The works on the new passenger pier will start at the end of this year, and are scheduled to finish after about a year and a half.

Another key element of the renovation plans is to build an airport hotel, as on-site lodgings are almost indispensable at major airports nowadays. Due to these project plans, the airport will undergo significant renovations, and it is expected that this will further increase passenger capacity, in which case they will erect a new terminal – Terminal 2C or Terminal 3 – which is currently under consideration. A number of new check-in desks will be installed, and the parking lots will also be significantly expanded and improved.

The large-scale renovation plans laid out in BUD2020 also promise a new cargo center, Cargo City, and all security lanes will be equipped with cutting-edge body scanners that enhance the quality of security scanning and the comfort of passengers alike. Furthermore, the rail and road connection between the airport and the city will also be improved. Budapest Airport will be connected directly to the Metro 3 Kőbánya-Kispest terminus, as an underground railway station will be constructed at Terminal 2.
