Underground Images” showcases a selection of more than 50 promotional posters from the archives of the School of Visual Arts in New York, designed by distinguished artists and illustrators, spanning nearly 70 years of thought-provoking poster art. SVA has been a leading institution in the education of artists, designers, and young professionals for more than six decades, cultivating some of the most eminent American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The eye-catching New York subway posters transcend trends, embodying a cry for creativity and risk taking, and even though themes have changed over the years, their messages live on as true incitements to individuality even today. SVA and A38 jointly present the 52 posters of “Underground Images” displayed chronologically in a checkerboard pattern in A38’s gallery hall, as a highlight event of Budapest’s ongoing PosterFest 2016.

PosterFest 2016 – happening during November 3-25 in Budapest – is not just an exhibit, but an event series that aims to periodically present the new values, possibilities, and results of graphic design and poster art. The exhibit features three separate sections; the first exhibition showcases a juried selection of the artworks of Magyar designers made to honor the 60th anniversary of Hungary’s 1956 Revolution against Soviet occupation. The second section features cultural and commercial posters of general interest created by professional Hungarian graphic designers, and the third part presents the designs of invited international artists. The exhibited posters are on view in the main hall of Eötvös Loránd University’s Faculty of Science (1117 Budapest, Pázmány Péter sétány), and entry to the exhibition is free.
