Starting in summer of next year, wealthy visitors to Budapest can stay in a Ritz-Carlton Hotel. The luxury hotel palace at Deák Square, currently operating as Budapest's Le Méridien, will be given a thorough remodeling and reopen with 192 rooms and plenty of deluxe amenities.
A Hungarian unit of Ritz-Carlton, known for their sumptuous luxury hotels, is scheduled to open in June 2016, according to prnewswire.com – although the news cannot be found on the menu for future openings on the hotel chain’s website at this point. The well-known hotel chain is present in major European cities like Vienna, Berlin, and Barcelona, in addition to a number of North American hotels.
"For Ritz-Carlton, Hungary is the next major international opportunity for expansion,” said Herve Humler, the company’s president and CEO. "We are particularly delighted that the first new hotel will open in Budapest, the political, cultural, and commercial center of the country.”
The building, located between Erzsébet Square and Deák Ferenc Street, is the property of the Al HabtoorGroup, headquartered in the United Arab Emirates, and was previously operated by the hotel chain Le Méridien. Among other things, the conglomerate also owns InterContinental, located on the Danube Promenade.
The pre-modern residential and office building, formerly known as Adria Palace, was built for the Trieste-based Adriatic Insurance Company between 1914 and 1918, based on the plans of Móric Pogány and Emil Tőry. Previously, the ground floor was occupied by shops and the attic gave place to ateliers, and then for a long time, until 1997, the Budapest Police Headquarters operated here. Le Méridien opened back in 2000.
