A special, nostalgic exhibition has opened in the Kós Károly Cultural Center at Budakalász, in connection with the essay collection entitled "Hová mész, Budapest?" (or "Where are you going, Budapest?" in English) by Balázs Györe. The montages, created by Zoltán Kerényi, open a window to the past by combining old photos of well-known locations with their modern counterparts. The exhibition shows just how some things change, while others remain the same.

The basis of Zoltán Kerényi’s photomontages were several photos found on Fortepan, an online private photo collection. The photographer – who also has a degree in architecture – combined these old photos with more “current” versions of the urban locations. He started to work on the montages in 2011, and since then, his collection, showing the old and the new Budapest, has grown to a significant size.

Photos made with the “picture in picture” principle require great attention to detail. First, the photographer must find the given location, and then attempt to set the original angle and focal length, so that later he can edit the old, black-and-white image’s fraction into the new one.

Among others, the exhibition will feature a cycling dog and a cyclist from our day, the Fisherman’s Bastion with a lady dressed in old-fashioned clothesvand another in modern fashion, the Museum Boulevard with an overturned tram, and many other exciting locations and settings as well as old and new vehicles.

The exhibition will be held in the Kós Károly Cultural Center, which is just a two-minute walk away from the Budakalász Lenfonó

HÉV station. If you have some spare time over the upcoming holiday season, it's worth going out to Szentendre and seeing Zoltán Kerényi’s work.
