After Bakonyi Zsuzsa's photo tour, we couldn't wait to go on another adventure during which we can look at Budapest's streets, squares, sights and residents as photo models rather than plain surroundings. This time around, our guide was Mariette Harms, and our adventure was entitled A Different Perspective, a walking tour focusing on photo composition and thinking outside the box with a camera in your hand.

Budapest contour

From the three available tours - Budapest at Night, Retro, and Different Perspective - we chose the one built around composition. Our trip began at Batthyány Square, at the entrance of the market hall. Mariette always arrives with a laptop in order to review the basics before the walk gets going. Since you can use whatever type of camera you prefer, at this point, your guide will also take a quick glance at your gadgets. But practice is the essence of the tour, and so we receive most of the tips, corrections, and additional information on the go. Our first stop is the Danube bank, and as our first lesson, we learn how to think outside the box and how not to take the thousandth identical photo of the Parliament.

Small streets, big radius

As crazy as it sounds, Várnegyed (Castle Hill) has much more to offer than World Heritage tourist attractions such as the Halászbástya (Fisherman's Bastion) and dozens of vantage points with postcard-worthy panoramas. A change of attitude regarding what is worth taking a photo of, and a change of angle or lighting can make your pictures of narrow cobblestone streets, stairways, fences, windows, street signs and other details look so much more unique. Sometimes it's enough to step a bit to the right, bend your knees just a little more, or nod your camera for a second in order to take a better picture. Mariette assists you in picking up on these nuances and answers all your questions - let them be about technical aspects or personal preferences regarding photos.

Budapest-training

Even though all three tours have a predetermined route, these can be altered if someone gets too caught up in snapping macro photos of cobblestones and raindrops dripping from the leaves. The tour we were on was an easy-going, chatty walk focusing on the photo-worthy wonders of Budapest. Highly recommended for English speakers who're eager to learn the know-how of taking unique, pro-level photos.
