There are times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed, and we don’t have the means or time to head out into nature to properly rejuvenate and unwind. Fortunately, downtown Budapest features several sites where we can escape the daily grind while staying within the concrete jungle, like a teahouse offering ancient tea ceremonies, a turmix bar enhanced with a salt cave, a charming vintage salon, a community café and artistic hub, and a bookstore with a spacious garden. At all of these places, the atmosphere is laid-back, lovely, and always welcoming, no matter what state of mind you arrive in.

Café des Arts & Innovation

Café des Arts & Innovation is a true artistic and creative station that attracts an ever-increasing number of university students, startuppers, and expats, thanks to its foreign owners. Its tasteful interior is mostly decorated with French furniture; the comfortable couches and chairs make you never want to leave, and here, you don’t even have to feel bad if you only buy a mug of coffee or tea while you work, read, or relax during the afternoon. Cydonia Vintage (ceased)

Cydonia Vintage on Akácfa Street holds a healthy hint of English charm and nostalgia. Besides proffering tasty teas and homemade cakes, Cydonia also features a gallery full of vintage knickknacks and clothes, and in the past we saw treasures here like a brooch from the ’20s, or an Escada blazer. The atmosphere is much different than anywhere else in town. During the warmer months, guests can devour homemade iced teas here, and the windows of this tiny store often open up wide. Don’t forget to try their homemade cakes!

Flying Bird Tea House

There is life beyond fruity tea filters, and it is pretty impressive. Flying Bird is the perfect place to rewrite our memories of the teahouses of the 2000s with something more sophisticated and full of intriguing flavors. The proprietors of Flying Bird are experts of Chinese tea rituals, and their tea selection comprises several hundred high-quality teas stretching from light white to more complex and stronger pu’er teas. Upstairs, we can lounge by tiny tables, soaking our tea leaves in pure boiling water. They are always glad to help us pick the strength and flavor that suits us the most, and they are also happy to explain the various steps of a true tea ceremony anytime.

Massolit Books & Café

Massolit is a café, a bookstore, and a community space in one – which happens to be enhanced with an atmospheric garden and guests form all around the world – and this is one of the most charming places in Budapest. Behind the building of Massolit we find one of the largest green areas in District VII that we can only admire from here, as its intimacy of this serene space lined with several fig trees is safely guarded. They often organize reading sessions and roundtable talks that truly boost your energy here, and this is also a perfect place for meeting all kinds of interesting people.

Sóker Salt Caves & Relaxation Centre

Sóker on Mozsár Street is a relaxation center in downtown Budapest that mostly focuses on salt therapy and on the positive effects of this powerful mineral. Underneath the salon we find a surprisingly large salt cave that boasts several rooms. There is a salt sandbox for children, and a larger and atmospheric salt room where not only meditative concerts, but sound-therapy sessions and light shows are often held. In the winter and the spring, it is recommended to visit this salt cave for immune-system strengthening therapy, while during the rest of the year, you can enjoy a variety of other programs held here.
