Che Che Bistrocafe’s yellow sign can easily be spotted while walking on downtown Pest’s Teréz Boulevard, or while traveling past it on the 4-6 tram. We now reveal what unique treats hide inside, in case you haven’t yet found out, and why it’s so worthwhile to drop by early in the morning. At the outset we can say that Che Che specializes in making grilled sandwiches, so-called “not burgers”, that are basically burgers that break away from classic ingredients. They have a permanent selection offering nine types of superb sandwiches, such as the Thai chicken, Caesar, and steak versions.

Let’s start with a question that is often asked by many people upon first reading Che Che’s name: how do we pronounce it? Well, however you like is the answer, but the owner’s background story about a family nickname indicates that the pronunciation has more of a “tch” sound instead of a “k” sound. Now there’s only one more question left: what is a “not burger”? It is a sandwich made with a dense burgerbun made of rye flour, filled with all kinds of goods cooked on a grill.

Now imagine nine different variations that are all partly crispy, partly melt-in-the-mouthy, and mainly juicy (990-1,490 HUF), with incredible flavors. There is always a big twist behind the simple names; for example, let’s check out the popular steak version. By “steak” they mean a patty made of mouthwatering Uruguayan Angus beef, which is enhanced with homemade red-onion jam, melted cheddar, and mustard sauce between the buns. The ingredients work very well together, and after a quick tasting, the prestigious position of this sandwich already became clear. We definitely didn’t stop there, as we wondered how melted goat cheese works with roasted walnut and a slightly sour vegetable sauce called Branston. We loved it, and encouraged by this experience, we kept on trying out other tasty treats: this time we asked for fried eggs, browned bacon, vegetables, and homemade sauce between our buns. This sandwich is called ham & eggs, and it is a perfect breakfast choice for hedonists. The sandwiches are very filling, so we decided to taste the other versions another time.

Every week, as part of the daily menu, an extra “not burger” is offered, which does not make our choice any easier. If we order a lunch special, in addition to the savoury sandwich, we also get a creamy soup and a lemonade (1,290 HUF). Recently, the lunch special consisted of a Mediterranean-vegetable cream soup and a turkey ham-Camembert-cranberry-saucesandwich; if we don’t have much time on our lunch break, we can call ahead to place an order in advance. Naturally, even the “not burger” cannot exist without chips, which we can get served with a spicy Hungarian sauce for an extra 490 forints. As the sandwiches are generously packed with fillings and sauces, we recommend devouring them at one of the tables of the gallery upstairs.

Those who believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day can definitely mark Che Che on their map, as they open their doors at 8am, awaiting guests with special breakfast menus. This doesn’t mean yogurt and cereal, but rather hearty meals, such as the aforementioned ham & eggs “not burger”, sandwiches made with croissants, or grilled sausage with fried eggs and bacon. These can always be washed down with an Italian coffee, or a smoothie made of seasonal fruits (790 HUF).Che Che also has a food truck, which you might have already seen at local festivals, but if not, it is highly likely you will in the future. Until then, the rich grilled sandwiches – which are a perfect choice for breakfast, lunch, or dinner – and flavorful craft beer from Fót are all found at Teréz Boulevard 56.
