It’s a common belief that the greatest places to discover in every city are all hidden gems, tucked away on secluded side streets. This is often true, but there are always exceptions – such as Pékery, located on a corner of St. Stephen’s Square and Sas Street, which looks like a simple bakery at first glance. In reality, the place is a sort of an alternative version of the Gelarto Rosa ice-cream parlor, located just one corner away; they both specialize in rose-shaped delights, with Pékery’s selection including sweet and salty baked goods, along with sandwiches, cakes, and various snacks.

Pékery opened just a few steps away from St. Stephen’s Basilica in January. Because of its name (a clever mix of the Hungarian and English languages, as “pékség” means “bakery”), we initially thought that this would be just another bakery, but soon discovered that there’s more to this place than what meets the eye. Pékery is a curious fusion of a bakery, a café, and a pleasant breakfast restaurant, with an open kitchen and a quirky interior featuring chairs covered with flour bags, cute little paintings, and a lathe-turned-counter.

The menu offers fresh bakery products, sandwiches, cakes, and breakfast served all day, with some dishes including coffee and orange juice.

The breakfasts are simple but delicious, and artfully presented. We can choose scrambled eggsor fried eggs for 590-690 forints, move on to the “all-in” petit déjeuner (1,390 HUF), or eat a simple croissant (350 HUF), depending on our hunger. The counter showcases small, rose-shaped quiches as well, cleverly indicating that Pékery is sort of a sibling of Gelarto Rosa, located just a corner away – here we also find ham slices arranged like flower petals, and cakes with blossom-shaped icing.

According to the owner, the place cannot function as an official “bakery” because of a regulation, so in the future, Pékery will offer pre-baked goods and undergo more changes, as the final concept is still under development. The place is already more than a bakery anyway – we think it’s best described as a breakfast place.

One of their future specialties will be salty ice cream (following the example of Gelarto Rosa), which might even be offered in flavors like pesto or salmon, although we don’t have specific confirmation about this for the time being.

Indeed the ever-creative Pékery crew is constantly experimenting with new ideas, and high quality is always accompanied by kind service as well, all for prices that are quite reasonable for this part of Budapest – we are sure that this fresh hotspot will continue to flourish in the future.
