On almost every corner from Buda Castle to Heroes’ Square, and from the National Museum and the House of Terror, we can find sculptures and special monuments reminding us of Hungarian history in Budapest. However, the city features hardly any memorials dedicated to World War I, when 661,000 Hungarian soldiers lost their lives, and which decisively influenced the history of Hungary, along with the rest of Central and Eastern Europe. A new memorial competition intends to change this, inviting people to propose where and how they would prefer to commemorate the “Great War” in Hungary’s capital.
