Water polo is a very popular sport in Hungary, and holding the European Championships here in Budapest is a big deal for the Magyar hosts. The biannual European Championship tournament pits Europe's best 12 men's teams and best eight women's teams against each other. The competition began today, but it's not too late to secure seats, as tickets are still available for both the women's and men's group matches and finals through July 27.

This is the fourth time that the European Championship has been held in Budapest, with other top tournaments held here in 1926, 1958, and 2001. The tournament is happening at the modern Hajós Alfréd National Aquatic Center on Margaret Island. In the past Hungary has won the most European Championship titles in the men's game, while Italy has won the most in the women's game. The defending champions from the 2012 tournament held in the Netherlands are Serbia for the men and Italy for the women.

The Schedule
The men's tournament is broken into Group A (Romania, Georgia, Montenegro, Greece, Italy, and Russia) and Group B (Hungary, Spain, Serbia, France, Germany, and Croatia). The men have already started the group matches, with the finals series to start on July 23 and

the final to be held on July 27.
The women are scheduled to start their group matches on July 16, with their finals to begin on July 22. The women's final will be played on July 26. The women's Group A includes Great Britain, Greece, the Netherlands, and Hungary, while Group B includes Italy, France, Russia, and Spain.

Tickets
There

are

daytime and evening matches, and you can still
buy tickets

for both. Tickets start at 1,000 HUF.
Trams 4 and 6 take passengers to the entry point on

Margaret Bridge , from where the aquatic center is a short walk, or Bus 26 from Nyugati train station traverses

the island's entire length and can drop you directly at the swimming center.

What is water polo
Two teams of seven (including a goalie) each attempt to score goals by throwing a soccer-like ball into the opponent's net. There are four quarters of about eight

minutes each. The pool is usually 1.8 metres deep and players must tread water, swim around, and attack each other (nonviolently, of course!) while trying to get a goal. All this makes water polo a tough contact sport – especially

because players barely wear any protective clothing. This is an exciting sport and the atmosphere at this tournament –

particularly because it's held this year in water-polo-mad Hungary –

is likely to be electrifying no matter which match you attend.
