For bouldering you do not need ropes or harnesses and there's no need for safety minders. There's a much freer movement experience and you don't need to concentrate so hard while conquering the walls. The climbing motto 'Work less, climb more!' is not accidental, since we're really moving all of our muscles while working with our own body weight and our muscles are under constant resistance.
Monkey Boulder, the biggest boulder room in Budapest and the whole country, opened in May. The opening event was attended by hundreds of enthusiastic people who enjoyed banana cake in the shape of the Monkey Boulder logo, and of course got into this great new sport as well.
Martincsák István, one of the directors, fulfilled a dream he's had for years by opening this boulder room on Szentendrei Road.
The space is about 770 square metres and the walls are about 4.5m high. Climbers/fallers land on a 35cm thick carpet, and there are more than a hundred kinds of climbing routes, designed by coaches, athletes and professional climbers.
Budapest has three similar rooms, but none provide as good a climbing surface as Monkey Boulder. 'We are trying to provide quality services. We want to operate as a real climbing centre: we will hold training sessions, lectures and presentations, and will welcome professionals and beginners in the same way. For the former, we hope to pose challenge with the unique ceiling system and the classic boulder races, and for the latter, we will hold free weekly introductory sessions. We also welcome children from the age of six, since as we all know, kids love to climb everything - however we do not have a wall specifically for children yet,' says centre director Martincsák.
There are walls of every shape but it's generally considered to be less dangerous than rope climbing. And bouldering is seen as a sport that's more fun than traditional rope climbing because more people can do it at the same time so it provides a unique community building experience.
