This fortress atop Gellért Hill is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an emblematic symbol of Budapest. Even though it was originally built by the Habsburgs after the Revolution of 1848 as a fortification to discourage uppity Hungarians, today we rather think of Citadella as a symbol of freedom. It is also an excellent lookout point and wedding-photo location, over the beautiful bridges straddling the curving Danube, Buda Castle, Parliament, the Pest embankment and the Buda hills. We also find the Liberation Monument atop the fortress, a dramatic statue that commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for the independence of Hungary, depicting a proud lady who has been watching over Budapest since 1947.
