Réka Vágó – The alpha and the omega of Hungarian shoes

Réka Vágó is probably the most popular and the most celebrated Hungarian shoe designer. She fell in love with shoes at a very early age and her experiences with ballroom dancing made her realize how important good quality is when it comes to footwear. She was educated at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest and after she graduated she applied to the London College of Fashion and Art. A few years later she returned to Budapest and she established her own brand, called rekavago, in 2005.

Her collections are all made from high-quality materials, leather in particular but sometimes she also uses different types of textiles and fabrics. Her designs are for women who would not like to give up comfort for the sake of sexiness, yet they would like to maintain a feminine image. Réka also makes handbags, accessories and pieces of jewellery and she collaborates with local fashion designers as well. Her designs can be seen on Hungarian celebrities but her collections are available for everyone – everyone who has the budget to afford designer labels. You can find the rekavago pieces in the studio of the designer in Szent István park.

Tisza Cipő

“Minden időben, Tisza cipőben” – goes the old slogan that translates into something like “Tisza shoes, all the time”. The story of Tisza shoes goes back to the early 1930s - that was the time when Thomas Bata decided that he will establish his very own shoe factory. He found the ideal place for the factory in Martfű and very soon the manufacturing of the shoes began.

By the 1970s the Tisza shoes became the most popular footwear designs in Hungary and very soon they became an international success. The signature Tisza shoes were available all across Europe, but they also became popular in Kuwait and Liberia. Back in those years the factory was producing millions and millions of shoes for the growing international markets. Unfortunately the company went bankrupt a few decades later, but 2003 and a new company brought the iconic brand back to life. Ever since the Tisza shoes, bags and accessories have once again became really popular – it is one of the favourite Hungarian brands of the local youth. There are Tisza brand stores in the city centre of Budapest but the collections are also available in selected shops of the countryside.
