The most prestigious prize in club football is up for grabs on Saturday night when Manchester City play Chelsea in Porto. Can Pep’s team bring home the trophy for the first time? Can Tuchel’s crown a whirlwind four-month turnaround at Chelsea for the German manager? All will be best enjoyed over a beer or two before the big screen. Kick-off 9pm! Here are the ten best venue suggestions:

Please note that outdoor venues are open to all, while sitting inside a bar or restaurant requires an Immunity Certificate.

1/10

Budapest Park

Usually a major outdoor music venue in summer – Iggy Pop played here in 2019 – Budapest Park sits near Rákóczi Bridge in south Pest. For Champions League night, it’s holding four separate parties, admission free until 10pm. The Match Party starts at 11.30pm...! Note that Immunity Certificates are required for entry. 2/10

Cooltour Bar

With a large terrace outside and bar spaces within, this popular spot near Millenáris Park behind the Mammut mall in Buda should be pretty lively for the big game. Cooltour has two sister branches on Király utca, near Pest’s nightlife quarter. More details here

3/10

High Five Budapest

By the entrance to the Gozsdu Udvar on Király utca, High Five Budapest is walking distance from main Deák tér, so an easy stagger there and back by public transport. It has a terrace – book a table through the Facebook events page – so those not in possession of an Immunity Certificate can still enjoy a few drinks while the two teams do battle in Porto.  More details here

4/10

Klauzál Deli

For a more romantic, less rowdy atmosphere, yet still in Budapest’s bar quarter, the Klauzál Deli Coffee & Wine Shop offers a terrace and match-viewing. This is a more refined spot for fine Hungarian wines and pálinkas – copious beer-glugging is probably best enjoyed elsewhere.  More details here

5/10

Lupa Beach

For that real summer feeling while watching the football, head to Lupa Beach in Budakalász, just north of Budapest. See the game on a huge screen, with your feet in the sand, sipping a cocktail, surrounded by palm trees and a big lake of water you can jump into to celebrate/commiserate afterwards. More details here

6/10

Miamor Rómaim

Up by the Danube on the Római embankment so popular in summer, Miamor Rómaim will be screening the match on a huge LED wall. Calling itself a ’Food Courtyard’, the Miamor Rómaim offers other attractions, too, such as two courts for beach volleyball, a playground with a playship for kids and a small stage for performances.  More details here

7/10

Stifler Bar

Set on the bar-lined Nagykörút between Blaha Lujza tér and Király utca, with plenty of alternative options a tram stop away at most, Stifler is a chain of American-style, sport-friendly hostelries. At this main branch, 27 screens show the action as burgers sizzle away in the kitchen, and battles rage over the pool tables, pinball machines and table-football tables. There’s a terrace too, for those without Immunity Certificates. More details here

8/10

Treffort Kert

The Budapest branch of the Chelsea supporters’ club is setting up at the Treffort garden bar, in the student quarter. Four TVs will be ranged around the outdoor lounge area accommodating 50-60 visitors. Although Immunity Certificates aren’t required, the venue is asking people to follow the pandemic rules, and wash their hands as often as possible. Eyes down for the raffle!  More details here

9/10

Winners

There’s a terrace here on the Nagykörút but the real football atmosphere is indoors, with a whole mess of screens – Immunity Certificates required inside! More details here

10/10

Zengő Bár

Also in the Palace and student quarters, the Zengő awaits with a big screen, craft beers and discounted apple pálinka. Although there’s no admission charge, reservations are recommended. Entrance by Immunity Certificate only. More details here
