Late October and early November aren’t only about spooky season, pumpkin lanterns and dressing up. They’re also a time for remembering loved ones, spending time together and trying something new. Día de Muertos brings its colourful Mexican traditions to Budapest with authentic food and special programmes celebrating life while remembering those - including beloved pets - who are no longer with us. For something a little more thrilling, head beneath Kőbánya for a Halloween run through its dark underground tunnels, with shorter routes above ground for younger participants. And beyond Budapest, families can look forward to seasonal food, creative workshops and playful Halloween adventures near Bikács.

As October draws to a close, Budapest is getting ready for Halloween and Día de Muertos, with events ranging from Mexican traditions and seasonal menus to underground running and family days out. Some celebrate and remember those no longer with us, while others are simply an excuse to dress up, try something different or embrace the spooky side of the season. Here are four programmes to check out over the autumn break.

Día de Muertos at TODO, where you can remember your pets too

"We still set a place at the table for those who are no longer with us." Alongside Budapest's usual Halloween celebrations, TODO Mexican Kitchen is bringing a Mexican tradition to the city with Día de Muertos, running from 27 October to 2 November. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time to remember loved ones while celebrating life, with the ofrenda - an altar decorated with photographs, flowers, candles and favourite foods - at the heart of the tradition. This year, TODO is creating a special ofrenda dedicated to beloved pets who have passed away. Called El parque eterno - The Eternal Playground for Pets, it will feature photos sent in by guests, which the restaurant will print and add to the altar. Anyone who would like their pet to be included can send a photo and name to hola@todomexico.hu. Alongside the ofrenda, TODO will serve a traditional Mexican seasonal menu, finishing with an orange-flavoured take on the famous pan de muerto, served with goat's milk caramel and fresh orange. The ofrenda can be visited from 27 October to 2 November.

Experience the spirit of Mexico at Calavera

From 31 October to 2 November, Calavera Budapest is bringing the traditions of Mexico's Día de los Muertos to the heart of Újpest. Rather than a Mexican version of Halloween, the three-day celebration is about remembering loved ones, celebrating life and coming together, with flowers, candles, photographs, food and colourful skulls all playing a symbolic role. Calavera will set the scene with colourful decorations, music and plenty of fiesta atmosphere, accompanied by a special menu of traditional dishes. Expect a selection of tacos, spicy corn-based pozole, steamed tamales and Calabaza en Tacha, a fragrant caramelised pumpkin dessert. The drinks are getting a seasonal twist too, with a fig margarita, Pumpkin Spice Margarita and Día de los Muertos shot, alongside a selection of tequila and mezcal. Together with Calavera's revamped Latin American menu, the three-day celebration offers a taste of Mexico while also introducing guests to the traditions and meaning behind Día de los Muertos.

Halloween Run 2026: a spooky adventure beneath Kőbánya

On 7 November, the mysterious tunnels beneath Kőbánya will once again fill with creepy characters, eerie lights and unsettling sounds for Halloween Run 2026. Combining running with a little seasonal thrill, the event takes participants underground for 4.3, 7, 14 and 21-kilometre routes, with spooky surprises waiting along the way. Younger runners can stick to shorter routes above ground, while those who prefer walking can take on an 8-kilometre Ötpróba hike. A costume competition, spooky installations and special finisher medals add to the atmosphere. Places are limited, so it's worth registering in advance.

A Halloween day out at Zichy Family Estate

Autumn at Zichy Family Estate brings together seasonal food, outdoor activities and plenty to keep both children and adults busy. On 27 October, Dani Juhász, winner of the first season of Hungarian gastro-reality show Éttermek csatája, will lead a special food workshop, with advance registration required. There's also a honey-themed gastro day, complete with a honey sauna session for adults. Elsewhere around the estate, guests can discover traditional crafts or try their hand at archery, while Halloween brings a full day of family activities. Children can join themed games and creative workshops, with a group pumpkin-carving session among the highlights. With food, activities and plenty of autumn atmosphere in one place, it makes an easy option for a family getaway during the school break.
