Celebrate Chinese New Year in Chinatown Budapest
On 18-19 January, join Budapest's Chinatown in stepping into the Year of the Snake. Head to Monori Center, in the 10th district, where the streets will come alive with colourful decorations, cultural activities, and mouthwatering food. This year's highlight is the cultural delegation from Kaifeng – one of China's most ancient cities and former capital of eight dynasties. Experience the rich cultural heritage of Yu opera, Xylography posters, blown candy, Kaifeng lantern, Chinese kites, and royal-school butterfly drawings. Other festivities include a lion and dragon dance, dumpling-making workshops, a Chinese tea ceremony (complete with tasting), and plenty of festive eats.

Go vegan this Veganuary
You've probably heard of Veganuary – maybe you're even taking part. But if not, here's the deal: it's an annual challenge encouraging people to go vegan for a month while learning more about the lifestyle. Many Budapest restaurants are joining the movement with special offers, and if you’re ready to dive into the world of plant-based dining, we’ve rounded up the best vegetarian and vegan spots for you to try here.
Put on those ice skates
No winter is complete without ice skating, and Budapest makes it extra special with scenic spots and fun features. How about a spin on the city's largest and oldest rink in City Park? Or would you rather glide above the city at Buda Castle? We've rounded up 4 must-visit ice rinks for the season.

Wander through stunning light installations
Perfect for a family outing, but also works as a date night; Budapest has transformed into a city of lights this winter. Several mesmerising light exhibitions are brightening up the season, each with its own unique theme. Head to ELTE Botanical Gardens for a Smurf-filled adventure, explore Margaret Island's Lumina Park featuring princesses, dinosaurs, and Narnia characters, or enjoy the Light Art Museum's indoor installations.
Details here (The Lightdome is already closed, but the rest of the exhibitions stay open until March.)
Fill up with music at these concerts
For an epic concert venue, head to A38 ship, where both local and international acts take the stage. This January, catch French experimental rock quartet Ni and the electrifying tribute band Lead Zeppelin. Over at Dürer Kert, get ready for a dose of delta blues-inspired tunes from The Wanton Bishops, while Avárium Klub will showcase the soulful sounds of Hungarian talent András Áron.
Get a taste of a true Alpine delight
Gőzgombóc, a sweet steamed bun filled with jam is a beloved treat in southern Germany and the chalets of Austrian ski resorts. The good news is that you don't need to travel all the way to the Alps to indulge in this wintertime classic. Just head to downtown Édesmindegy, or travel a bit further to Post Balaton, major, or Kis Tirol to discover creative takes on this traditional dessert. From the classic plum jam filling with poppy seed and vanilla custard topping to unique twists, there'll be plenty for your taste buds.
Start the New Year with a refreshing hike
After all the festive feasting and toasting, a crisp walk is the perfect way to reset. Whether your New Year's resolution is to get more active or you're just looking for a laidback way to enjoy fresh air, Budapest has you covered. If you'd stay in the city, Gellért Hill will be the best choice – coming with magnificent views from the top as a bonus – though Citadel is still under construction. If you're up for venturing a bit further, Normafa offers nice trails and a stop at Normafa Síház for refreshments. Another great option is Hármashatár Hill, a popular hiking spot with rewarding views and trails that won’t push you too hard.
Plunge into hot thermal water
Hungary is famed for its thermal waters, but the real magic lies in taking a dip outdoors during winter. Picture this: freezing temperatures all around, but you're comfortably soaking in steaming hot water, just enjoying historical surroundings. You can live this very experience at Széchenyi Baths or Gellért Baths. For a less grandiose but also less touristy vibe, head to Lukács Baths.
Warm up in a lakeside sauna
If you're looking to go full-on Scandi this January, Lupa Beach will be the place to be. Transformed into Lupa Hygge for the season, you can enjoy relaxing sauna sessions and hot tubs, with an optional cool dip afterwards. Situated on the sandy beach by the lake, it’s the perfect spot to unwind – and if you’re lucky, a dusting of snow will add to the magical atmosphere. It’s worth the short trip out of the city for a stress-relieving experience, whether you’re going solo, with a partner, or with a group of friends.
Sip on hot chocolate
Hot chocolate is a must when it comes to crispy weather: it heats the body and soul alike. And what could be a better way to end January than sipping on a mug of steaming hot chocolate at a Budapest café? For creamy versions, creative flavour combinations, and cute teddy bears, go to Rengeteg Romkafé! For laidback vibes (and a post-exhibition sit-down) Mai Manó Café, right next to the photography centre Mai Manó House, is an excellent choice. For over-the-top toppings such as cream, marshmallow, and sprinkles, to Ahoy! it is!
