Although there won’t be any carnivals this year, you needn’t go without the colourful doughnuts associated with them. Here are the best places to find the fanciest.

1/4

Badass Coffee & Donut

Having started out as a specialty café, Badass Coffee & Donut now carries heavenly doughnuts to go with their brews. In addition to a range of traditional versions, they also offer new-wave flavour combinations, with themes such as peanut butter, s’more and maple syrup with bacon.

2/4

Bomboloni

Szabi Szabadfi opened his doughnut store on Pozsonyi út in 2019. The flower-shaped goodies with creative fillings and homemade jams might remind locals of the homely ones prepared by grandma, yet they are professional and modern. As well as at this outlet, Bomboloni doughnuts can be found at various markets around town and at Szabi’s other bakeries.

The Box Donut

You can find these rectangular doughnuts in various places in Budapest – at the Basilica, and Nyugati and Keleti stations. Some standard ones are just glazed on top while others are filled and full of colour. Their signature shape is not only easy to recognise, but they’re also practical, as they can neatly fit into the delivery boxes. Seasonal versions are always available, currently in vanilla-apple and chocolate-pistachio flavours.

Fánkterápia

‘Doughnut Therapy’ on Ráday utca also serves as a lesson in American confectionery culture. They specialise in the iconic, police-favourite sugar-glazed doughnuts you might see in The Simpsons, but also regularly come up with seasonal novelties. Their playful innovations surprise even their most loyal returning customers.
