Budapest’s vibrant music scene is powered by a number of internationally acclaimed concert halls that can host thousands of people and performances of real superstars. However, these venues sometimes cast a shadow on the small lesser-known clubs where up-and-coming bands and cultic underground outfits play – until now. We’ve collected five places which might be a bit harder to find than the big-name venues, but have such unique atmospheres, programs, and crowds that we felt they deserve more visitors. Stage-dive into the real underground of Hungary’s capital!

ShowBarlang

If you cross the street to the opposite side of MüPa, you get to a small park, and at the back of it, you find the entrance to Közvágóhíd. There, look for the tower under which ShowBarlang, the only concert cave of the city, can be found. Yes, this is a true concert cave, where you can enjoy rock from the neolithic age (as well as from shredding guitars) and have a drink for a really wallet-friendly price. Before you start worrying: the staff doesn’t consist of cavemen, and the concert-hall acoustics are surprisingly good, so visiting the venue to see your favorite band won’t be a bad memory, or end up on cave walls or ceilings. But keep in mind that this place’s capacity is limited, so get here on time if you don’t want to miss the show!

R33

R33 is located near ShowBarlang at Közvágóhíd, and it’s one of the most interesting cultural spaces of the capital. It functions as an exhibition space, a concert hall, a club, a ruin pub, and as a meeting point for hipsters, beatniks, rockers, and all kinds of underground figures – something like Christiania in Copenhagen. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that all kinds of bands are welcomed here, in genres ranging from goa to psychedelic rock, from world music to doom metal. Also, R33 functions as an incubator too: they have some rehearsal studios for rent, and manage up-and-coming Hungarian bands, so if you stumble across some of your favorite local musicians, that wasn’t by accident. Truly a pleasant place to get lost!

DRRPNC

DRRPNC – aka Dürer Pince – refers to the rehearsal rooms and the proto-concert venue that are found just a few steps away from Dürer Kert. Tizedes, a legend of the local punk scene, runs the place, which can be reached the following way: enter at the nearby gate, go behind Dürlin, and at the right side of the building (under Keleti Blokk’s ex-residence), you’ll find it. If you’ve made it this far, don’t turn back, but prepare yourself for the most brutal hardcore punk, crust, or d-beat performance you’ll ever hear. Just like ShowBarlang, the capacity is limited at DRRPNC (sometimes referred to as The Chamber Of Secrets, aka A Titkok Kamrája), so if you want to get in, arrive on time.

Bakelit Multi Art Center

Közvágóhíd is a real incubator for the local underground culture: if you want proof, here it is – Bakelit Multi Art Center is also located there. This multi-faceted art complex on Soroksári út is comprised of a hangar, two dance floors, a “nook”, and a bar made of bottles. Here you can bump into theater performances, concerts, exhibitions, and literature nights. The “knowledge center of contemporary arts” also operates a hostel, so if you never want to leave this vibrant art scene behind, you don’t have to. In terms of music, everything can blast from the speakers, from contemporary classical tunes to alternative rock, so keep an eye on their program – it will surely intrigue you sooner or later.

Address: 1095 Budapest, Soroksári út 164.
