Photos by filmmakers? A moving image is actually a series of stills, so the aesthetics are similar. But 'similar' conceals the difference between film and photograph, and the essence of movement. The filmmaker must therefore have a different artistic approach to the photographer. This compilation selects pieces by
directors who have recently passed away – István Gaál, Ferenc Kósa, Sándor Sára, Vilmos Zsigmond – whose work can now be considered classics. But they also showcase their predecessors: images by filmmakers who often began their careers as photographers in the era of silent film or early sound, before switching to the new medium. They addressed the entire profession, not only cameramen and directors, but also those working in any field of filmmaking. This exhibition brings together photographs by filmmakers working in a variety of eras, genres and styles, juxtaposing independent creative worlds and pictorial thoughts.
