For centuries the
mirror
has been the
symbol
of answers. We cannot see anything other in a mirror than what we possess within. The reflection is something derivative compared to reality, the reflection is an ephemeral image of the real. That is why the reflection of the reflection, which art is, has been chased as the extreme non-truth. On the other hand, often the reflection presents a more truthful form than the direct image, alike those optical illusions, where the slurred image can be turned into a complete one only by a crooked mirror. the mirror provides visibility, according to the first idea, through an illusion it shows the fraudulent as true. Based on the second idea we can observe the infinite only v
ia its mirror image, as our bounded minds cannot access it directly.
However, there is a third view, which refuses to believe in illusions or unfathomable truths. According to this, the question is not what is true – because everything is – but why we perceive that very truth which is apparent for us in the world. This view also holds the mirror as a central metaphor.
